Stakeholders Urged To Uphold Ethical Values At Close Of Campaign To Promote Good Governance In Regional, Local Authorities

The Public Independent Conciliator of the North-West Region, Mr. TAMFU Simon FAI has officially closed the three-month Campaign to Promote Good Governance in Regional and Local Authorities.

The campaign was closed during a ceremony in the auditorium of the Office of the Public Independent Conciliator of the North-West Region in Bamenda on November 04, 2025 in Bamenda.

To ensure a culture of Good Governance, regional and local authorities are expected to adopt practices that are transparent and accountable to their population, to manage resources with integrity while working in synergy with the population and grassroots structures to spur development in their communities.

The PIC observed governance inefficiencies in regional and council functioning, some of which are;

– growing allegations of bribery,
– accountability deficiency in council management,
– slow and unfair service delivery,
– lack of transparency, insufficient communication between regional and local authorities and the masses.,
– mismanaged resources and ineffective development planning and
– low participation in decision making.

The Campaign to Promote Good Governance was launched on 1st August and ended in October 2025. It was organized to sensitize regional and council administrations to be more engaged, inclusive and more diligent in managing their affairs and in the management of issues affecting citizens’ welfare and development.

The Public Independent Conciliator in his official closing statement, reminded the population of their role in participating in council activities and engaging the councils to guarantee efficient services.

For three months, the Public Independent Conciliator used the campaign to:
– raise awareness among councils and citizens about the importance of good governance,
– promote transparency, accountability, participatory decision -making in local councils,
– strengthen institutional capacity for ethical leadership and effective public service delivery,
– enhance citizen engagement, to ensure local governance is responsive to community needs and
– advocate for policy improvement that uphold good governance standards in local administrations.
Community-Based Volunteers and other partners of the PIC were involved in the campaign, including the press in the North-West who made efforts to ventilate messages on six principles and values:

– Integrity,
– Transparency,
– Accountability,
– Participation,
– Fairness and Rule of law,
– Efficient, affordable services.

The media personalities present during the official closing ceremony asked questions from the mechanisms put in place to reach the local population in the suburbs, the feedback got, the sustainability of the campaign, to the challenges faced during these time.

Other journalists sought to know if more Development Associations will be visited to continue the preaching of good governance principles, the observation around the issuance of civil status documents and more importantly the call to sanction Mayors defaulting the principles set by the Office of the Public Independent Conciliator.

The Public Independent Conciliator reminded the population that, though the campaign is officially closed, work continues, in ensuring that the office continues to check the functioning of all councils in the North-West Region and that the local population enjoy their rights and are served diligently.
