THE PUBLIC INDEPENDENT CONCILIATOR TAKES THE BULL BY IT’S HORNS.
It is no news to see poorly managed municipalities around Cameroon, despite enormous support from the government. It is with this
back drop that the office of the PUBLIC INDEPENDENT CONCILIATOR (PIC) North West Branch under the able leadership of Mr. Tamfu Simon Fai organized a 2days training seminar to orientate Mayors within the municipality on the rights, duties, ethics and functions of Mayors and their close collaborators. Also, the training seminar was geared to reinforce and nurture meaningful collaboration among stakeholders.
Present during the seminar were Mayors, representatives of the regional assembly, as well as men from the civil society, who all affirmed that, the stitch came just in time. Speaking during the seminar for the second time in 10 Months, the Mr. Tamfu Simon reiterated PIC’s commitment to ensure the effectiveness of councils and better their functions.
It should be noted that, upon creation since December 2020, PIC has as duty to settle disputes amicably and propose statutory amendments or new legislation to ensure the effective functioning of Regional, City and Local Council administrations and report to the President of the Republic through it’s channels. PIC is also in charge of promoting and protecting the rights of citizens, beneficiaries of council services, prevent direct and indirect discrimination and enforce ethical standards in regional and council functioning.
PIC must therefore play the role of a bridge between local authorities and the councils. A huge task indeed, which PIC stands charged, but optimistic that, by the end of the training seminar today October 28 2022 with each party understanding it’s rights and roles, the bridge will get even wider, and more purposeful. It was disclosed that PIC is no police behind councils. The 3pillars that PIC was trusted with are; Pacificator, Watchdog and Advocate of councils. So far, work has been smooth between PIC and some councils, with some answering present to respond to accuses against their councils. Humility filled the atmosphere throughout the 2 days training seminar with Mayors going back more determined to serve their communities.
